The Art of Regulation - Yoga & the Nervous System

Join us for a journey into the wisdom of the nervous system, a 20-hour immersion dedicated to exploring the art and science of regulation through yoga, breathwork, somatic awareness and embodied practices.

Our nervous system is constantly responding to the world around us, shaping how we feel, move, breathe, connect and experience life. Understanding its functions and responses allows us to develop a deeper relationship with ourselves, recognise our patterns of stress and tension, and discover ways to cultivate greater balance, resilience and inner steadiness.

Open to everybody, from curious beginners and dedicated yoga practitioners to yoga teachers and wellness professionals, this Yoga Alliance Continuing Education immersion offers an opportunity to explore nervous system regulation not only through theory and understanding, but above all through direct experience.

Together, we will explore the relationship between the nervous system, breath, body and mind, drawing on both ancient yogic wisdom and contemporary insights from neuroscience and somatic practices. Through a combination of gentle movement, yoga, breathwork, meditation, sensory awareness and embodied exploration, we will discover how different practices influence our physiological and emotional states, and how to work with the nervous system rather than against it.

We will look beyond the idea that regulation simply means relaxation, exploring the importance of flexibility within the nervous system, our capacity to move between activity and rest, to respond to life's challenges, to recover from stress, and to feel grounded and connected even in the midst of change.

Whether you wish to better understand your own nervous system, enrich your personal practice, or bring a more sensitive and informed approach to your teaching, this immersion offers a space for exploration, reflection and meaningful integration.

The intention is to experience, understand and embody the art of regulation, leaving with a deeper awareness of your own nervous system and practical tools to support yourself and others in everyday life and, for teachers, within your teaching.

What you will learn

This 20-hour immersion is an exploration of the nervous system through the lens of yoga, breathwork, somatic awareness and modern neuroscience. Expect a blend of theory and direct experience, ancient yogic wisdom and contemporary science, movement and stillness, personal exploration and practical tools for everyday life.

Rather than simply learning techniques to calm the nervous system, we will explore how regulation actually works, how to recognise our own patterns and responses, and how to cultivate greater flexibility, resilience and balance.

Here's what we'll explore together:

🧘‍♀️ Understanding the Nervous System

  • The foundations of nervous system anatomy and physiology

  • The autonomic nervous system: sympathetic and parasympathetic responses

  • Understanding stress, survival responses and the body's natural capacity for recovery

  • The vagus nerve and its role in physiological regulation

  • Exploring the window of tolerance and our capacity to navigate different emotional and physiological states

  • The relationship between the nervous system, emotions, thoughts and physical sensations

  • Understanding regulation, dysregulation and co-regulation

🌿 The Art of Regulation Through Yoga & Breath

  • How breathing patterns influence the nervous system and our physiological states

  • Exploring different breathing techniques and their effects on arousal, relaxation and emotional balance

  • The relationship between movement, posture, sensory awareness and nervous system regulation

  • Gentle yoga, mindful movement and somatic practices to develop greater body awareness

  • Exploring the role of grounding, orienting, rhythm and restorative practices

  • Meditation, mindfulness and interoception as pathways towards greater self-awareness

  • Understanding why relaxation is not always the same as regulation

  • Learning to recognise what your nervous system needs in different moments

🌸 Embodiment & Integration

  • Developing greater awareness of your own nervous system patterns and responses

  • Exploring the connection between safety, presence, connection and resilience

  • Understanding the importance of choice, agency and individual differences in regulation

  • Cultivating nervous system flexibility rather than striving for a constant state of calm

  • Creating simple, sustainable practices to support regulation in everyday life

  • Bringing nervous system awareness into yoga teaching through a sensitive, trauma-informed approach

  • Learning how to support others without imposing a particular emotional or physiological state

The intention is not to control or silence the nervous system, but to understand its language, listen to its signals and learn to work with its natural intelligence.
